Concordia 1, Rochester 0
(October 6, 2008 - Rochester, Mich) -- After coming ever so close to that elusive win last week with ties against Rochester and Cornerstone, the Concordia men's soccer team (1-4-2) finally broke through with a 1-0 non-conference win over Rochester. The win was the program's first since September of 2004 when they defeated Grace Bible College 4-3 on the road. The victory marks the first win in 64 consecutive games and is a solid reassurance that the program is headed in the right direction. Despite a 3-0 setback against Aquinas on Saturday, the Cardinals have shown improvement throughout the season. However, the struggles have been evident on the offensive end, where they have been held scoreless in five of six games.
After playing Rochester (6-5-2) last week to a 0-0 tie and their first non-loss in 31 games, the Cardinals were able to capitalize on a goal by Yonathan Zeleke (Fr.-Lansing, Mich) halfway through the second half. The goal, which was assisted by sophomore Ali Badra (Niamey, Niger), was only the second Cardinal goal of the season and first of the year for the young freshman. The game also marked the second shutout of the season for Cardinal keeper Brian Kressbach (Jr. - Clinton Twp, Mich), both against Rochester. The last time a shutout resulted in a win for Concordia was eight years ago when they posted a 3-0 win over Defiance on September 5, 2000. Concordia will look for their first home win since 2003 when they host Davenport University (6-4, 2-3) at Rummel Field on Saturday. The Cardinals will look to slow down Panther sophomore David Wood who has scored six goals in the last three games. |
